The medieval village of Trausse, with 440 inhabitants is located in the wine area of Minervois, at the base of the foothills of the Montagne Noire (Black Mountains) , 25 kms from Carcassonne in Languedoc-Roussillon.
Built around the 8 - 9 Centuries, there are medieval remains dating back to the Cathar period in the XII and XIII Centuries.
Trausse has its own coat of arms, described in French heraldic language as "d'hermine, sur champ argent, a chef fusele de sinople".
The Tour Trenceval, built in the 10th Century, stands in the adjacent square. Owned originally by the Abbey at Caune Minervois, it reverted to the ownership of Trausse, in 1589.
The village had no street names until 1990!
Being in the heart of a wine region, the village has four wine caves:
Domaine Tour Trenceval, Chateau de Paulignan, Domain Luc Lapeyre and Domain Saint-Sernin.
